Farms with a Future: Market Gardening at Verona

(Click on any image to enlarge)

The SCPA 'Farms with a Future’ Ground Work Day at Sandra Gauld’s property in Verona on 23/11/16 was all about market gardening.

The day started with a quick tour of the property including:

the market garden,

the orchard with adjacent duck/chicken house,

the recently repaired dam wall,

the repair of the gully erosion,

and the goats who were exiled for the day.

Sandra explained her market garden set up and recent soil test results which are informing her soil management practices.

Sandra also shared her market garden plan which usually is accessed on her phone but was printed out for this occasion.

Garden Plan showing the sequence of crops to be planted in each row over several seasons.

Then work then started in earnest. Attendees were split into small groups and assigned to rows. Each group was given written instructions.

Example of the instructions provided to each group.

Beds were prepared.

The fertilisers (organic/naturally occurring) were collected from the tent,

and sprinkled onto the beds.

The irrigation hoses were put into positon,

and the seedlings were planted

and watered.

Yet again, the photographer was distracted during the last step (mulching) – this time on washing up duties.

Thanks to Sandra Gauld, the participants, the Farms with a Future Team (David Newell, Penny Kothe & Carolyn Wells), the Caterer (Linda Sang in Cobargo) and South East LLS for a great day.

Farms with a Future is part of the $125 million of National Landcare Programme investment that Local Land Services is delivering to boost farm gate productivity and improve environmental health across NSW.
