Hugelkultur Permablitz

Today at the Gaia Range Farm in Bemboka I hosted a Hugelkultur Permablitz with the help of SCPA - South East Producers.

Several people came to help and to learn about this amazing approach to growing food where wood is buried in the earth to nourish plants well into the future. In our case the plants are the young trees in our new food forest. It's been a great day sharing lots of knowledge and work, that changed my mind about wood, a different perspective, no longer as just firewood or a building material, but also as a 'potential source of food'.

Most of the people around the world using this technique lay the logs in horizontal stacks but, as Seph Holzer suggested, I wanted to try the 'vertical logs method' where you dig a hole in which you stand the logs on end, so that the water soaks into the logs faster along the natural fibres of the wood, speeding up the process of decomposition, becoming sort of like sponges of water and making food available to the plant.

When the Permablitz team assembled, we worked out how best to do this. We decided to dig holes about 1m in diameter and 50cm deep, then put the thickest logs on the outside and the smaller logs in the middle to make it easier for the roots of the new tree to penetrate.

We filled the spaces with a mix of cow manure and sawdust, nitrogen rich material to help start the decomposition process, then mounded about 40cm of dirt from the hole on the top. The tree was planted into this mound. Comfrey was planted alongside the tree to bring minerals up to the surface and pumpkins were planted to provide ground cover.
